Abstract
This thesis introduces gender as a lens through which music is viewed. It analyzes the influence of gender on different facets of songs, such as the lyrics and interpretations made by listeners. This thesis begins with an explanation of the meanings in songs and the difference between gender and sex. It will then apply the concept of gender to the lyrics and artists of songs, briefly mentioning protest music in relation to the case studies. An analysis of the influence of gender on a song sung and covered by artists of the opposite gender pits these theories against each other. This analysis reveals the different cultural impact songs can have based on the gender of the artist.
