Abstract

The corona pandemic and its subsequent measures stimulated the use of new media in museum spaces - for instance, virtual reality (VR), which grants the possibility of creating entirely digital environments through which visitors can step into the (virtual) past. As such, VR influences the museum experience. Through an autoethnographic lens, this thesis analyses the VR tour of the Anne Frank House. It combines the field of both heritage and media studies and builds on the ideas of David Lowenthal, Jean Baudrillard and Allison Landsberg. By examining the VR tour of the Anne Frank House, this thesis focusses on the troublesome dichotomy between the real and the virtual and the popularisation of cultural heritage through the use of VR.
