Abstract

This thesis explores the question “how can specific sonic decisions for Dune shape the affective environment of the film?” While thinking about concepts of audiovision, technology and the assemblage, I aim to contribute to film sound research by combining the methods and insights of recent research to investigate the sonic worlds of sci-fi films in meaningful ways. First, I present some orienting concepts and soundtrack theory to explain the theoretical considerations in this thesis’ framework. Chapter one explores the trajectories of various sounds to see how they physically shape the affective environment. The second chapter explores psychological processes involved in the ways sounds shape the experience of an affective environment. Finally, the conclusion combines the results of those two chapters to reflect on the possibilities of sound in cinema as well as the role of technology.
