Abstract

As the role of companies in the sustainable transition become more and more relevant, it is important to look at stakeholder integration to see how companies can engage in this transition. A lack of understanding regarding the role of organized labor, such as works council, in corporate social responsibility is addressed. In this thesis a qualitative, abductive research is conducted regarding how works council engage in the sustainable transition of companies. Ten semi-structured interviews are carried out in five companies, to gather experiences and insights from works council members. A Gioia table was developed to visually represent the findings derived from the empirical data. This table serves as the structure for narrating the results of the study. The results shed light on the perspectives of works council members and their potential role. The status-quo on the engagement of companies, and their works councils, leaves room for improvement. Works council members see themselves are advocates for employees, serving as watchdogs and sound boards. They show openness to a more proactive role, seeking for opportunities and initiate change, particularly regarding social sustainability issues. This study sheds light on the role of works councils in sustainable transition of companies. It engages in the importance of employee representation and involvement in CSR.
