Abstract

To be able to learn large quantities of words, our mental lex- icons store unfamiliar words close to similar words that already exist in that lexicon. This e ect goes beyond the scope of one language, creating heterolin- gual clustering. Albeit potentially useful, knowledge of brain similarity coding is currently hardly used in language learning. To remedy, we implemented an adaptation of the game Concentration, called MindSort. I investigated if order- ing the cards by orthographic similarity, corresponding to the mental lexicon, has an e ect on Finnish language acquisition. The results revealed no proof for such an e ect, but did provide some new hypotheses about the implementation of the game, practice e ects and individual di erences. These can contribute to future development of new education methods that are more compatible with the functioning of the brain.
