Abstract

Rita Felski and Elizabeth S. Anker have observed that there is an ongoing crisis in literary criticism. Postmodernism is at its end, and so the question arises: what comes after? Furthermore, there is a significant movement in reviewing books online. Due to this movement there is a severe difference between the professional reviewer and the lay reviewer in the way that they review books. On both #Bookstagram and #Booktok the lay reviewer uses emotional language appears often. This thesis aims to research how English and Dutch reviews on #Bookstagram and #BookTok engage with emotional language, and to which aspects of the books this relates to. The results show that certain emotions appear more often than others, and that these differences are higher on #BookTok than on #Bookstagram. Furthermore, the results show that books often are rated higher due to the reviewer feeling an emotional while reading.
