Abstract

Despite a great potential, urban rooftops remain frequently unused, especially in northwestern European cities, yet are often seen as trendy or chic. This thesis examines the role of one civil society initiative – the festival organization Rotterdamse Dakendagen – that attempts to transform Rotterdam’s rooftops by putting culture-centered approaches at the base of this transformation. Instead of providing technical solutions, such as many other rooftop-related initiatives and organizations do, it uses an annual festival on the city’s rooftops to trigger cultural changes. The organization was investigated through the lenses of temporary urbanism and concepts of sustainability. Research mainly relied on in-depth expert interviews with members of the festival organization, as well as with representatives of other stakeholders in the city. This research shows how the organization Rotterdamse Dakendagen facilitates Rotterdam’s sustainability transition, the festival organization’s multi-dimensional impacts, and the main roles it ultimately plays for rooftops in Rotterdam. Additionally, the benefits and potentials of urban rooftops are discussed in this thesis with a strong focus on cultural and multifunctional uses.
