Abstract

Moving towards higher sustainability on campuses is the priority in the majority of university agendas. However, when it comes to biodiversity loss, many people tend not to recognize the urgency of the issue. Universities due to various factors partly contribute to changes in the natural landscape and, therefore, to the loss of biological diversity. Universities as well have thousands of students and employees, who daily make use of a large amount of campus facilities. The amount of carbon dioxide released by average university can be compared with the emissions of one small or medium enterprise. All of this directly contribute to biodiversity loss in and around universities. Therefore, the following study explores the causes of biodiversity loss and the steps taken on both international and local levels. The research seeks for answers with the help environmental stewardship movement through the constructionism paradigm. The concepts of environmental stewardship and credible commitment are applied to the cases of the research universities in the Netherlands. With the help of multiple case study and desk research the following question is inspected: “To what extent universities contribute to higher level of biodiversity on campuses and whether their actions could be considered as examples of the environmental stewardship?”. Key words: Biological diversity, biodiversity loss, urban biodiversity, conservation, nature inclusivity, sustainable universities, environmental stewardship, credible commitment.
