Abstract
During the fourth crusade in 1204 Constantinople was conquered by western soldiers mostly hailing from the north of France and Flanders. These crusaders set up an empire that lasted for roughly 60 years, before succumbing to external and internal threats. No less than six emperors claimed the imperial crown. This dissertation examines how the Frankish identity of the northern French crusaders influenced the selection of the emperors of the Latin Empire of Constantinople.
