Abstract
Over the past years, there has been an increasing interest in the (rule-based) translation of management concepts. Despite this popularity, there has been little empirical research into translation as a rule-based practice and its implications in practice. Besides, much is still unknown about the role actors play in translation processes, and especially how they can ensure their translation becomes predominant. Consequently, by investigating the translation of circular economy at the Water Authorities, this research aims to dive deeper into rule-based translation. Furthermore, a frame alignment perspective is used in order to discover how actors convince others of their own viewpoint. To investigate this in more depth, a qualitative multiple case study was performed, consisting of a document analysis and nine interviews at different Water Authorities. The results of this research demonstrate how slightly adding to a concept (translation via modifying mode) can cause discussion and a need to justify this addition. By employing different strategies aimed at frame alignment, the interviewees tried to convince others of the necessity of their extra circular steps. This thesis therefore advances literature on (the consequences of) rule-based translation processes. In addition, more light is shed on how a translation can become predominant in practice.
