Abstract
Various government organizations in the Netherlands aim to increase the number of cyclists
while ensuring road safety. This study focuses on the relationship between subjective road safety
and human factors at roundabouts for cyclists. This research examines the behaviour of cyclists
at roundabouts and their perception of safety. Human factors, which explain how individuals
interact with their environment, were observed at nine roundabouts in Breda. Differences in
markings and signage were found, especially with regard to cycle lanes. At roundabouts without
segregated cycle lanes, cyclists tended to cycle against the flow of traffic. Cyclists' origin and
destination in relation to the roundabout also influenced their behaviour. Subjective road safety
was assessed through a digital survey, with 137 respondents stating that they often felt unsafe
due to the behaviour of other road users, particularly car drivers. The intensity of traffic also
played a role in their perception of safety. Being seen by other road users was crucial for cyclists.
The study concludes that addressing road safety for cyclists at roundabouts can be achieved by
considering both human factors and subjective safety. Subjective safety can guide further
research into roundabouts, while human factors can help identify potential causes of unsafe
situations. The research provides recommendations for practical improvements, such as marking
at cyclist junctions.
