Abstract

The notion of ‘trawthe’ was established in the Arthurian poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Trawthe consists of three aspects (religious, courtly, and chivalry), influenced by Gawain’s interactions with other characters. How Gawain’s trawthe is conveyed in adaptations of the poem can be similar to or different from the original depiction. This research analyses presentations of Gawain’s trawthe and his character in David Lowery’s 2021 film The Green Knight and Stephen Weeks’ 1984 film Sword of the Valiant through close reading to illustrate how narrative changes in adaptations affect the depiction of a specific element of Arthurian legend. First, Gawain’s character and trawthe in The Green Knight are analysed and compared to the source text. The same is done for Sword of the Valiant, after which both adaptations are compared. This research contributes to debates concerning Arthurian film adaptations, interpretations of Arthurian characters, and depictions of Arthurian literature elements.
