dc.description.abstractLocal energy transition initiatives (LEIs) could potentially play a substantial part in the energy transition, if they are successful. The institutional context has a large influence on these initiatives, but institutions can be hard to change. To legitimize the LEI, institutional change is necessary. Institutional entrepreneurs can attempt to facilitate institutional change in order to legitimize these initiatives. It is unclear, however, what methods these institutional entrepreneurs use to facilitate institutional change in local energy transition initiatives. A single case study of a LEI that aimed to disconnect a neighbourhood from the gas grid was done. It was found that organised residents facilitate institutional change by developing a shared environmental conscious vision and strengthening the local character of the initiative. They also influence the selection of the gas substitute by opposition and participation to align the new practice with existing institutions. Furthermore, the grid operator facilitated institutional change by taking initiative in selection of the gas substitute.en_US
