Abstract

The need for more climate action is still at the top of the international agenda. One concept linked to people’s willingness to protect the environment is social capital. This study aims to answer the question if and what aspects of social capital play a role in this possible link for the region Central and South America. To answer this question a multilevel ordered logistic regression is applied for three different models. In each model social capital is conceptualised differently, based on its forms, dimensions, and functions. This study finds a positive significant effect for the aspects Social Trust, Information Access, Structural, and Bridging social capital. A significant negative effect is found for the aspects Institutional Trust, Cognitive, and Linking social capital. These results imply that to improve environmental prioritisation merely aiming to improve social capital is not enough, instead only the improvement of certain aspects of social capital will have the desired effect of increasing the willingness to protect the environment.
