Abstract

Society today is faced with many challenges including poverty, inequality, environmental degradation, peace, and justice, climate change and many more (United Nations, n.d.). As a result, the importance of sustainable development has increased nationally and globally (Freidenfelds, Kalnins & Gusca, 2018). A significant shift in policies of national governments, practices of organizations, corporations, communities and in our individual choices is needed (Corcoran, et al., 2002). Because of these challenges, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) feel a high urgency to respond (Freidenfelds, et al., 2018). Theory suggests that successful environmental performances of organizations depend on several factors, but also on the voluntary contributions of employees. This has led to a relatively new area of research in Organizational Citizenship Behaviour towards the environment, which explores voluntary behaviours that help to make organizations or society more sustainable (Armitage & Murugan, 2013, in Bashirum, et al., 2019). By applying this model, this research wants to provide insights into how HEIs can stimulate students and employees to contribute to sustainable development by using Radboud University as a case study. A mixed method strategy was used during this research, in which 65 students and employees completed a survey and another 6 additional interviews were conducted among them.
