Abstract

This study analyses narrative models of the hero’s and heroine’s journey through the female main character of the animated film Wonder Woman. This film, which was directed in 2009 by Lauren Montgomery, is the object of this thesis. Specifically, this study focuses on the models created by Joseph Campbell and Maureen Murdock, that will be examined by answering the following research question: ‘How does the superheroine in the animated film Wonder Woman relate to the narrative models of the hero’s and heroine’s journey created by Joseph Campbell and Maureen Murdock?’ To answer this question, the female character is examined in terms of gender. The first chapter gives a short overview of the origins of the Amazonian superhero, the representation of the warlike Amazons in classical literature and the plot of the film. In the second chapter the journey of the superheroine is analyzed according to the stages of both Campbell’s as Murdock’s model.
