Abstract

Medium-sized city centers in the Netherlands are under pressure due to societal developments such as the covid oubreak, online shopping, remote working, and demographic shifts. These trends contribute to declining visitor numbers and a decrease in economic vitality of the inner cities. This research investigates the extent to which inner-city redevelopment in seven Dutch medium-sized cities contributes to improving economic vitality. Using a mixed-methods approach, the cities are compared. The economic vitality was measured though visitor appreciation, spending behaviour and visitor data. The findings suggest that spatial interventions positively effect a few aspects of the economic vitality. This study underscores the need for tailored approaches and continuous evaluation to create resilient and future-proof urban centers.
