Abstract

The Netherlands are facing the enormous challenge of a transition in the energy system. Climate change is increasingly threatening society and the usage of fossil fuels needs to be phased out. Recently, new actors have come to the energy transition: local energy cooperatives. This fast-growing group of community initiatives have taken matter into their own hands and decided to change the energy system in The Netherlands from the bottom-up. In this research a qualitative multiple case study has been conducted to receive better insight in the question: ´How can local energy cooperatives contribute to the energy transition in The Netherlands?’. Therefore, the cases were researched on their vision, the projects they are involved in, the organization of the cooperative and the processes of wind park realization. Besides, the influence the local energy cooperatives have on the current regime has been researched at the hand of the political domain, economical domain, legal domain and the socio-cultural domain. This has resulted in a clear overview of the similarities and differences of individual cases, which then have been generalized into overall new insights and theories on the contribution of local energy cooperatives to the energy transition in the Netherlands.
