Abstract

Stephen King is the king of horror and has written more than sixty novels in this genre. Amongst these works are various fictional works based on authors or characters who practice creative writing. Within literary theory, much has changed regarding authorship. Many different theories have been written about, such as Roland Barthes' 'death of the author'-theory and Michel Foucault's lecture titled 'What is an author?' Even now, many changes are happening. Digitalisation and the internet have changed authorship in multiple ways. This thesis looks at six works by Stephen King in which authors are presented. The thesis will analyse the representation of authorship that is shown in these works. This representation will then be compared to other representations of authorship and also with various theories on authorship. Keywords: Stephen King, authorship, representation of authorship, Barthes, Foucault
