Abstract
This thesis focuses on BPAO Phase II (Business Park Amsterdam Osdorp), which was used a case study to investigate the phenomenon of ‘circular area development’ and to explore a current sensitive geographical area which is undergoing redevelopment. The main objective was to better understand what a ‘circular area development’ is via the perspectives of various stakeholders and to explore the socio-spatial friction that exists regarding the BPAO Phase II development. Using a communicative planning approach, the methods applied consisted of desk research and a field observation to provide case study context. Sixteen in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted along with document analysis on three case study planning documents. The results showed that stakeholder perspectives were mixed regarding the case study based on their unique education/experience on circularity which showed optimism but also pessimism towards the circular ambitions (design and function) of BPAO Phase II. To conclude, in the context of the case study BPAO Phase II, ‘circular area development’ is still not understood. The polder in which the case study is situated is historically significant with a focus on keeping the ‘greenness’ of the area. From the planning documents there is a desire to integrate the surrounding community via social functions but there is a clashing of visions for the developmental future of the area.
