Abstract

Multilingualism and linguistic diversity are increasingly significant in modern society. This thesis explores the attitudes of Dutch primary school (PS) teachers and heritage language (HL) teachers toward multilingualism and examines their collaboration. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 5 PS teachers and 6 HL teachers. Findings reveal varied attitudes: PS teachers are generally open to multilingualism but often stress Dutch language proficiency, while HL teachers actively promote multilingualism, drawing on their experiences as multilingual parents. Currently, there is no collaboration between the groups, though most express a willingness to cooperate despite practical challenges. The study concludes that HL education and regular education operate as separate domains. Bridging this gap could foster a more inclusive learning environment and challenge monolingual norms and policies.
