Abstract

As the discourse on asylum migration is increasingly shaped by social media platforms, practitioners look for ways to depolarise the debate. In this, the effect of the communicative setting on framing dynamics has remained underresearched. In this master’s thesis, two Dutch discussion platforms are researched to explore the effect of setting on the tone, theme and framing dynamics of the Dutch online asylum migration debate using a social media content analysis of posts. In this, it is found that especially the valence and style of tone, contestation of frames and tone shift are impacted by differences in setting.
