Abstract
This study investigates the potential of contemporary Dutch poetry as a tool for citizenship education among fifth-year pre-university (vwo) students. Amid growing concerns about social engagement, the research examines how poetry can foster critical thinking, empathy, and social involvement. Using Ken Plummer's theory of ‘narrative action,’ the study assesses poetry's ability to stimulate literary actions and reflections on citizenship themes. Twenty students engaged in group discussions and interviews focused on four poems addressing politics, religious freedom, multiculturalism, and sexual freedom. Results show poetry can spark temporary interest and curiosity, but sustained engagement requires teacher guidance. Key factors for student involvement were familiarity and comprehensibility, with discussions often remaining superficial without structured support. The research highlights the potential of Dutch poetry in citizenship education and suggests that, with appropriate pedagogical support, it can aid in developing critically thinking, empathetic, and socially engaged citizens.
