Abstract

This thesis sets out to investigate the role of water in relation to renewing the self in New Nature Writing. Two novels have been analysed and the results show that, as the literature of previous studies on (old) nature writing suggested, the role of water is very diverse. Self-renewal is accomplished through water acting as a cathartic element, releasing negative emotions. However, in the process of the acquisition of these cathartic properties of water, it takes on very diverse symbolic meanings such as death, loss and oblivion, attaining perfect happiness and a gateway to the past. Key words: new nature writing, role of water, renewal of self, cathartic element, to the river, the fish ladder
