dc.description.abstractDissatisfaction prevails in the present-day Dutch secondary school education among students when they have to read books for English. They believe they have to read too much, the topics are not enjoyable, and the language use sometimes is too difficult. This master thesis focussed on the fact if implementing young adult literature could create more enthusiasm among the students to read books for English. All students of havo 4 and vwo 5 at the Dendron College in Horst, the Netherlands, have filled in a survey about their reading experience at school, what they think are important elements in a book, and what they would change about the currently used literature at their school. One havo 4 and one vwo 5 class then partook in three lessons in which they were introduced to three different genres/themes withing young adult literature; racism, dystopia, and a murder mystery. Following this, the students were asked to complete a second survey which focussed more specifically on the their experience with young adult literature based on these three lessons. Both surveys showed that the majority of the students were of the opinion that the use of young adult literature would increase their enthusiasm to read books for English.en_US
