Abstract
In this thesis the argument is made that the Nijmegen based youth workers of the jeugdcoaches successfully use street culture as a way to gain and maintain trust with youths, in order to be able to provide care. Gaining and maintaining trust is done via the respected position of the jeugdcoaches in local areas embedded in street culture. The jeugdcoaches also show their respect and trustworthiness towards youth by embedding elements of street culture in sports activities they organize, and by doing extra practices for youths on a daily basis. Maintaining this respected position enables the jeugdcoaches to function as bridge between street culture and civil culture for troubled youths. By being in this bridging position, the jeugdcoaches provide in the care needs of youths, while also helping youths transition from street culture towards civil culture. The implementation of street culture within frontline social work can therefore function as an additional dimension, alongside other factors described in literature, in order to provide decent care in super-diverse neighbourhoods. This is especially so, since street culture can be used to form a base of trust between the care provider and care receiver, which is seen as necessary in order to provide decent care.
