Abstract
This thesis examines how Electronic Dance Music (EDM) influences urban spaces and identities in non-metropolitan cities, focusing on Vasim, a former industrial site in Nijmegen. Using Henri Lefebvre's spatial triad theory—imagining space as conceived, perceived, and lived—the study explores EDM's impact on urban identity. Updating Lefebvre's framework to contemporary contexts, it integrates themes of urban regeneration and community engagement. Through policy analysis and social media research, it reveals the dynamic interplay between physical and social aspects of urban environments.
The findings highlight Vasim's EDM events as potent tools for placemaking, transforming it into a cultural hub that reinforces Nijmegen's urban identity. This aligns with the municipality's vision of 'Old City, Young Vibe', leveraging historical and cultural contexts to cultivate a distinctive urban identity. The research contributes to urban studies and cultural geography by illustrating how EDM festivals shape and enhance urban identity, offering insights for non-metropolitan cities looking to integrate cultural activities into urban development strategies.
