Abstract
This thesis explores how K-pop fandom communities support migrants in their adaptation and sense of belonging in host countries. While traditional migration research emphasizes formal integration programs, this study highlights the value of informal, online networks. Using a mixed-methods approach, an online survey (N=57) and five semi-structured interviews were conducted with migrants active in K-pop fandoms. Findings show that fandom spaces offer both practical guidance—such as navigating bureaucracy, accessing services, and understanding cultural norms—and emotional support that helps reduce isolation. K-pop’s participatory culture, multilingual engagement, and organized global community emerged as particularly beneficial compared to other fandoms. Overall, this research demonstrates that K-pop fandoms function as meaningful, informal inclusion spaces that complement formal integration pathways by fostering social connection, cultural learning, and resource-sharing among migrants.
