Abstract

Shared spaces in urban design, prevalent in Dutch cities like Nijmegen, aim to enhance traffic safety. However, concerns arise regarding the perceived safety and accessibility for vulnerable users, especially the elderly and disabled. This research delves into the impact of shared spaces on perceived safety and transport inclusivity in Nijmegen. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combines survey data, expert interviews, and case studies. The survey, conducted among a diverse group, gathered insights on participants' experiences in shared spaces. Expert interviews added depth on design aspects, while case studies offered a detailed look into the functioning of specific shared spaces in Nijmegen. Key findings reveal that perceived safety in shared spaces is influenced by factors such as road design, traffic volume and speed, spatial function, and user demographics. The findings underscored a need for improved design and infrastructure. All respondents felt less secure in shared spaces compared to traditional roads, some avoiding them altogether. When asked about transitioning to active transport if shared spaces were improved, the response was mixed. The research emphasizes that while shared spaces can foster safety and inclusivity, their design and implementation need meticulous attention to ensure genuine accessibility and inclusiveness for all, especially vulnerable groups.
