Abstract

Kronenburg, a petrified and dense neighborhood in the city of Arnhem, will be thoroughly renovated. The plans for a new Kronenburg will be largely made together with residents. However, only a small part of the residents of Kronenburg is active in the participatory process. The municipality wants to include as many residents as possible, to create a fair participatory process. Therefore, this research will investigate the motives of residents to participate, or not to participate. Furthermore, the research will give recommendations for municipalities to include more residents in the participatory process in the future. The main question of this thesis is, thus: How can municipalities create a more inclusive participatory process? A variety of methods are used in this research. Starting with qualitative methods, both in-depth and expert interviews are conducted. Furthermore, during a neighborhood-meeting, the H-diagram method is used. Later on, a survey is used to collect more data from underrepresented research groups. The results of this research show that several interventions can be made to stimulate residents to participate. However, none of these will properly work if the preconditions for good participation are not right; good communication from the municipality, and a proper social cohesion in the neighborhood.
