Abstract

Companies nowadays have to operate and survive in dynamic environments. Therefore they want to apply organisational resilience (OR) to be able to anticipate, adapt to and thrive under change. The ISO management system standards (MSS) are a systematic and certifiable way to manage quality in an organisation. The ISO MSS are a method to improve OR, however, little research has been done on the way in which they contribute. Therefore, this thesis aims to study the contribution of the ISO MSS to OR and to study how this contribution can be improved. Exploratory qualitative research has been conducted, by interviewing nine companies on their experiences using the ISO MSS and one interview with an expert on OR. It is found that the ISO MSS does contribute to OR, however, this contribution can be improved in several aspects. First, the trigger to become ISO certified should not only be economic, there should also be a self-improvement incentive. Second, there is a challenge of self-imposed complexity when implementing the standard. Finally, a cultural shift, employee empowerment and bottom-up decision-making are success factors for the contribution of ISO MSS’s to OR.
