Abstract

This master’s thesis investigates the role of housing associations and their tenants in creating successful participation methods aimed at gas-free social housing renovations in the Netherlands. A social practice perspective based on Shove et al.’s (2012) social practice theory is applied to the participation process to find out how support for sustainable renovations projects among tenants is formed through participation and how this aids tenants to better adapt to their new sustainable practices. Five different cases in the Netherlands have been studied to find out how the renovations influence the social practices of the tenants, what participation methods are implemented by the housing association, and how this relates to the performance of practice and the support for natural gas-free renovations among tenants. Participation can be used as a collective tool to help tenants in shaping new practices. This research shows participation is mainly deployed as an informational tool aimed at the transfer of knowledge, while the composition of shared meanings is just as important for tenants in supporting the renovation and adjusting the subsequent practice change. Here lie opportunities for participation methods, in aiming at bringing tenants together so the construction of shared goals and values can be supported.
