Abstract

This research paper will focus on the manner in which The Times and the Daily News report on the Irish Potato Famine and the Highlands Potato Famine through an analysis of tone, word-use, and contextual research with regards to the newspapers’ people of influence, the findings of which I will use to uncover differences and similarities in reporting and to explain why these newspapers reported the news in a certain way. Previous research has been conducted on The Times’ reporting of the Irish Potato Famine, by Melissa Fegan (2002) for instance, who seemingly uncovered anti-Irish sentiments within The Times. Since her research overlaps with mine, I will be incorporating some of her findings in this research as well. My own research revealed that it is likely that The Times’s reporting is influenced by the perspectives of the ruling class, while the Daily News’s reporting is influenced by Liberalist ideas. This is significant for future research, as it provides a better perception of both The Times and the Daily News during that time and, therefore, uncovers the influences that lie in the coverages of these famines, which can be useful for future research.
