Abstract

This thesis investigates the displacement and dispossession of the al-Kurd family in Sheikh Jarrah, East Jerusalem. Since 2009, the al-Kurd family has faced forced displacement from part of their home and is now threatened with losing the remainder due to Israeli policies in the city. By applying settler colonial theory, this thesis situates their case within the broader context of Israeli governance in East Jerusalem. Utilising a qualitative research approach and a case study design, it draws on municipal policies, Israeli laws, expert interviews, and first-hand accounts from the al-Kurd family. This study demonstrates how the al-Kurd family’s experience is both a product and a contributor to the broader settler colonial project in East Jerusalem. Their displacement is not merely a legal issue but part of Israel’s larger strategy to Judaise Jerusalem, maintain Jew-ish supremacy, and oppress Palestinians. The analysis further reveals how Israel tailors its laws and policies to support its settler colonial objectives.
