Relationship of Teamwork and Quality of Supervision, and Educational Atmosphere: The Moderating Role of the Accessibility of Supervisors

Abstract

This study was conducted to find out whether teamwork, the quality of supervision and the accessibility of supervisors are related to a positive educational atmosphere as perceived by residents. It was hypothesised that there is a positive relationship between teamwork, the quality of supervision and the accessibility of supervisors, and a positive educational atmosphere. In addition, it was expected that the accessibility of supervisors moderates the relationship between quality of supervision and educational atmosphere. 250 participants participated in an online survey where they had to fill in the Dutch version of the D-RECT questionnaire. This questionnaire was designed to measure the learning climate and the educational atmosphere of residents in the Netherlands. To answer the question of this research, a hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted. The main effects of teamwork, quality of supervision and accessibility of supervisors were significant. Higher scores one of the variables were associated with higher scores on educational atmosphere. The two-way interaction between quality of supervision and accessibility of supervisors was not significant. The accessibility of supervisors does not significantly moderate the relationship between quality of supervision and educational atmosphere. All in all, teamwork, quality of supervision and accessibility of supervisors are positively related to a positive educational atmosphere.
