dc.description.abstractThe local government of Semarang is facing difficulties with Municipal Solid Waste Management, which affects the livability of the city. Despite the availability of waste management facilities in the community Tambak Lorok, a major part of the waste is still being disposed illegally via dumping or burning waste. This research aims to contribute to the understanding of different factors that play a role in local practices of waste management in the community Tambak Lorok, in order to identify opportunities and barriers for improvement. This is done by means of observations and an in-depth analysis of semi-structured interviews with the locals’ about their perceptions of waste and waste management in the community Tambak Lorok. The results have been analysed by using the framework of the Sustainable Livelihood Approach and other social concepts. Factors like a shortage of facilities for waste collection, limited environmental awareness and financial incentives for locals to dump their waste due to a local vulnerability in Tambak Lorok, appeared to play an important role in local waste management. Since there are only little resources to invest in better facilities and education, a suggestion is provided for an alternative low-cost local solution.en_US
