Abstract

This study investigates how institutional support influences the emergence and performance of Born Global firms originating from emerging markets. Drawing on New Institutional Economics and the Resource-Based View, the study examines how formal and financial institutional support mechanisms shape the internationalization trajectory of Born Globals. While institutional support is often assumed to facilitate early-stage international growth, this research highlights a paradox: Born Globals in emerging markets, where such support is most needed, frequently face ineffective or misaligned assistance due to institutional voids and governance weaknesses. Using a cross-sectional design, firm-level data from Orbis and LSEG and institutional indicators from the World Bank Enterprise Survey, this study employs logistic and linear regression analyses to test the effects of support on Born Global emergence and Born Global performance, while exploring the moderating role of emerging market origin. The findings reveal that while financial institutional support promotes Born Global emergence and formal institutional support enhances performance, the moderating effect of emerging market origin is limited and inconsistent. Financial institutional support showed a positive effect on Born Global emergence for firms originating from emerging markets. Suggesting that such support is critical in resource-constrained environments. Underscoring the context-dependent nature of institutional support. These insights advance international business literature by showing institutional effectiveness is constrained environments. Opening avenues for future research to deepen the understanding of how institutional support mechanism interact with firm context, particularly in emerging markets
