Abstract

This master thesis aims to investigate the effects of the crisis on regional resilience and unemployment resistance across different EU regions. The study combines data from 298 NUTS2 regions of 27 European nations. By analyzing data from the Eurostat and the OECD databases, the study explores the relationship between regional economic resilience, measured through unemployment resistance, and variables such as the unemployment rate, technological resistance and human capital. The research contributes to the literature on regional resilience and provides insights into the factors that influence unemployment resistance following an economic shock. The study’s methodology includes a specification curve analysis, allowing for the evaluation of different analytical choices and thus specifications to ensure robustness in the results. The findings are provided over 468 model specifications and suggests that human capital is negatively related to unemployment resistance, and technological resistance shows both negative and positive significance effects towards unemployment resistance. However, a few nuances need to be made. The findings can inform policymakers on strategies to enhance economic resilience and promote employment growth, emphasizing the importance of regional technological capabilities and investments in human capital. Moreover, it can inform other researchers by stating the limits of a specification curve analysis.
