Abstract

Earlier studies have described the representation of the witch in literature as either a symbol of resistance or a symbol of oppression. Witches in earlier studies seem to have a connection to nature, in which they are able to manipulate and control it. The witch is mainly characterised by stereotypes and lacks a sense of nuance. There has, however, not been any research regarding the representation of the witch in romantasy, a new genre mainly popular among young adult and new adult women. The purpose of this research was to analyse the representation of the witch in romantasy, with a special focus on the role of nature. To reach this goal, three books, published within the last five years, with witches as the main characters have been analysed by doing a close reading. The results show a nuanced, holistic representation of the witch as both an oppressed and resisting figure. The witch has a deep bond with the living world around her and makes living in tune with nature accessible and attractive, by romanticising a slow life away from the city and its fast developments. The witch creates a sense of safety and hope during global unrest and crises by showing an alternative reality in which nature and humans are equal and our world
