Abstract

Digital disconnectivity is gaining prominence in a constant digital connected world. Increased recognition of the importance of disconnecting has been raised among consumers in terms of improving their well-being. To create a better understanding of the complexities of digital consumption and how to disadopt this, the lens of Consumer Culture Theory (CCT) has been employed to empirically research the phenomenon of digital disconnectivity in the digital consumer culture. The understudied areas of disadoption and digital disconnectivity, are enhanced by investigating how consumers disconnect in daily life. This is done by applying the enabling lens of practice theory. However, prior work does not address how practices stay in people’s lives. Therefore, unique for this research is to understand and theorise how practices of digital disconnectivity become enduring. With the use of semi-structured interviews and non-participatory netnography, three levels (social, envisioned and enacted) of practices of digital disconnection were identified. Existing work on practice theory is extended by investigating how practices of digital disconnection become enduring. This research contributes to disadoption theories, digital disconnectivity, practice theory and CCT. Finally, by extending practice theory on enduring practices of digital disconnection several practical implications for consumers, managers, innovators and entrepreneurs are delivered.
