Abstract

Are you capable to adjust? A capability approach to employability enhancement of administrative employees working in a hospital implementing new technologies The goal for this research was to contribute to the employability enhancement debate, by examining the differences and similarities across administrative employees’ processes of employability enhancement in light of the impending technological innovations, using the insights from the capability approach. To be able to compare these processes, on the basis of nine qualitative interviews, the employees were divided into three groups, based on employees’ own perceptions and indications about their five employability competences. The groups were called the adaptive frontrunners, the ambivalent attempters, and the rigid waiters and the processes were compared within and between these groups. First, it was discovered that the mere availability of HR-practices did not increase administrative employees’ opportunities for employability enhancement. Second, it became clear that employees who needed to enhance their employability most, were unable to do so, as they were unable to overcome the hindering factors in their work environment. Third, the theoretical framework presented in this research was useful, but seemed too linear, because it became clear that a constant interplay of factors enabled the employees to enhance their employability and the output of the model could also be considered the input.
