Abstract

This study explores how manufacturers in the automotive industry can develop a comprehensive digital twinning infrastructure for the creation of Smart PSS. Organizations are increasingly shifting from product to service oriented business models, including digital capabilities in it. The findings of manufacturing companies, their dealers and customers in four cases show that the comprehensiveness of a digital twinning infrastructure does lead to an advancement in Smart PSS. It further contributes that development of this infrastructure, is influenced by both internal organization factors as external factors related to the cooperation with independent stakeholders. With regard to internal factors the organizational readiness, data control, data analyzing capabilities and the digitalization of the communication infrastructure of the manufacturer. And external factors such as dealer readiness for digitalization, dealer and customer willingness to share data and the data integration the customers want to be possible. This implies for managers that for the development of a comprehensive digital twinning infrastructure both its internal capabilities and what is accepted in the network needs to be taken into account.
