Abstract

Parental separation is a risk factor for maladjustment during childhood and adolescence. This thesis investigates whether parental separation is related to changes in school attitudes of early adolescents. The current study investigated whether school attitude in adolescents change over time and if this is moderated by living situation and gender. Participants included 500 adolescents (52% female) in a high school in the Netherlands, and ranged in age from 11 and 16 years (M=13.64, SD= 0.99). Surveys were completed annually in 2015 and 2016. Findings indicated that school attitude did decline over time, but living situation and gender did not moderate changes in school attitude. Explanations for these findings are discussed. Keywords: parental separation, living situation, adolescence, school attitude
