Abstract

The Netherlands has set itself a goal that is to achieve a fully circular economy by 2050, aiming at reducing resource consumption, waste generation, and environmental pollution among other areas. This thesis tries to examine the ongoing transition towards circularity. Its purpose is to analyse if the current mechanisms are good for the goals of achieving circularity by 2050. Using a mixed-methods approach including policy analysis, desk research, and semi-structured interviews, the thesis analyses the effectiveness of the Netherlands towards achieving circularity. The main findings suggest that, at the moment, circularity will not be achieved by 2050. The analysis reveals that more awareness, and stricter policies are necessary to achieve the circular economy goals. There is a need for more ambitious targets, better enforcement of regulations, and more incentives to promote circular practices. The findings are significant for the Netherlands and others pursuing a circular economy transition. This research highlights the need for more comprehensive and targeted policies that address the root causes of problems and promote circularity. The results of this study can inform policymakers, businesses, and citizens on the potential benefits of circular practices. It can also contribute to the development of more sustainable production and consumption systems.
