Abstract

This study looked into the impact of stress "deafness" on French speakers' production of English stress on English-French cognates. The experiment tested the effect of two fixed factors (the stress pattern - iamb, trochee, complex) and the cognate status of a word) on the production of two variables of speech related to a target word. The results show that the cognate status of a word did not lead to a longer duration of the speech intervals. Moreover, the participants produced cognates faster than noncognates, which suggests a potential "cognate advantage." Furthermore, the results show that as the complexity of the target word’s stress pattern increases, the participants produce longer speech intervals and more stress placement errors. These findings suggest that the stress “deafness” effect on French learners of English is closely related to the stress pattern complexity of words and L1 interference in L2 stress production.
