Abstract

The thesis examined the influence of organizational aspects on environmental sustainability strategies of hallmark events with the main research question being "How do the organizational characteristics influence the environmental sustainable strategy of the organization of hallmark events and why?" Event organisers are shown to be influenced by their organisational characteristics, by resource dependencies, as well as by legislative stakeholders. This research analysed two cases, the Zevenheuvelenloop and the Dutch GP, with the Zevenheuvelenloop being a foundation and the DutchGP a private limited company. Through interviews, document analysis and literature review the cases were studied on the different environmental sustainability measures that were taken and what influenced them in taking the measures. Contrary to expectations, the two cases revealed that the Zevenheuvelenloop's organizational characteristics drive their sustainability rather than being influenced by their sponsors or need of resources. Whereas the case of the Dutch GP showed more of an influence by their resource dependence and less by their organisational characteristics. It demonstrated how resource dependence, in situations where sustainability might otherwise be overlooked, can have a positive effect on sustainability at events. Yet, resource dependence is less likely to be of significance if there is already a strong internal drive.
