Abstract
Fandom studies are a relatively recent development within the world of literary theory. Everything known about fandom seems to come from social media or film-related fandom. However, literary fandoms are equally significant but severely underappreciated. Therefore, this thesis will research: Can J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter be used to explain if and how engagement in fandom aids in the promotion and marketability of the original text?
It is relevant to investigate this topic because the influence and engagement of fandoms tend to be underestimated and, therefore, underused. However, several franchises have benefitted significantly from their fandoms’ continued interest in their content. The production quality of fandom, and their function in promoting the texts, are instrumental in the understanding of consumerism in the 21st century. This thesis will explain theoretical contexts such as Foucault, network society and fan studies but will also be an introduction to fandom-specific terms and phenomena such as canon and fanfiction.
