The broader field of my research revolves around the American Holocaust Memory, a complex concept which is shaped both by politics as well as popular culture. By means of a visual analysis, this thesis takes as a central work both “The Diary of Anne Frank” and “Schindler’s List”. This thesis defines and explores the influence of both movies on Americanizing the American Holocaust Memory. The main research question is: How did the movies “The Diary of Anne Frank” and “Schindler’s List” Americanize the American Holocaust memory? Answering this question will help to define the influence of Hollywood movies on the audience’s memory of the Holocaust. In this thesis I will demonstrate that both The Diary of Anne Frank and Schindler’s List reduce the horrors of the Holocaust while highlighting the concept of heroism. Both films also represent the need for a justification of participation as well as closure. This, and many other amendments to the Holocaust have immensely Americanized the American Holocaust Memory.en_US
