In recent decades the importance of a unified organization in which information sharing is not hindered by departmental boundaries has increased. Therefore, the current research applied the Social Exchange Theory to find out more about the relationships between transformational leadership, clan culture, and interdepartmental information sharing (IIS). Specifically, the current study suggested (1) a positive relationship between transformational leadership and IIS and (2) a positive relationship between transformational leadership and clan culture. Furthermore (3) a positive relationship between clan culture and IIS and (4) a positive mediation of clan culture for the relationship between transformational leadership and IIS was hypothesized. The research hypotheses were tested through an online survey study in a sample of German employees (N = 73) from the public sector. A mediated multiple regression analyses revealed a positive relationship between transformational leadership and IIS. Transformational leadership was also positively associated with clan culture. However, clan culture was not associated with IIS and no mediation effects of clan culture for the relationship between transformational leadership and IIS were found. It is concluded that transformational leadership is related to interdepartmental information sharing and clan culture. Furthermore, it is concluded that clan culture is not related to interdepartmental information sharing and does not mediate the relationship between transformational leadership and IIS. The findings of the present research can be useful for organizations that want to stimulate IIS through transformational leadership practices. Keywords: Social Exchange Theory, transformational leadership, clan culture, interdepartmental information sharing, silo mentality
