Abstract

This study aims to diagnose the potential shortcomings in the governance structure and compare these results of three different oncological networks in the Oncology networks Netherlands East. After comparing them, they receive advise on their governance structures and whether or not to join Onco-oost. These networks differ in terms of size and background so they received personal diagnoses and advice. This study uses two theories to diagnose and compare the results. These are Network governance theory and Sociotechnical system theory. By using qualitative research methods including data forms of secondary interviews and documents the results were drawn. The results show that proper governance structure is necessary to make governance efficient and effective. Failing to do so will result in disturbances in the governance and eventually the primary processes of the network. Two of the networks faced issues that resulted from improper governance structures. These two networks are more vulnerable regarding finances and competition compared to the successful one which also played a role in failing to build a proper structure. As for the theories, the Sociotechnical system theory is the better theory to build a proper structure. Network governance theory is superficial and can mostly be used as a guideline or indicator and must be supported by additional theories such as the Sociotechnical system theory.
